Former Field Hockey Standout Javelet Named to USA Rugby Women’s Sevens Olympic Roster

Javelet will represent Team USA as Women's Sevens Rugby makes its Olympic debut
Former University of Louisville field hockey player Jessica Javelet has been selected to the USA Women's Sevens Rugby 2016 Rio Olympic roster as announced by USA Rugby on Monday.
The Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games inaugural Rugby Sevens competition will take place at the Deodoro Stadium starting Saturday, August 6 and finishing on Thursday, August 11. Team USA's women's squad was drawn into the competition's Pool A along with Australia, Colombia, and Fiji.
Javelet, who played field hockey for Louisville from 2003-06, becomes the 12th current or former UofL student-athlete to compete in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

Javelet, a native of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., played for the Cardinals from 2003 through 2006. She is the program's only three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-American and earned Big East Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2005 and 2006. The three-time all-conference team member is the most prolific scorer in program history, owning both the season and career records for goals and points. She capped her career as the school's first Honda Award finalist for field hockey.
As successful as she was on the field, Javelet was equally accomplished in the classroom, graduating in 2007 with a 4.0 GPA in marketing and was the valedictorian of the business school as well as UofL's Outstanding Graduating Senior. The program's only three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American was also named the 2006-07 Big East Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship to name just a few of her academic and extra-curricular accolades.
She was selected to USA Field Hockey's Under 21 team in 2005 and trained within the national team program until 2009.
USA Women's Sevens Rugby in the Olympics
All 12 teams will be divided into three pools with four teams apiece. The top two finishers from each pool move on to the quarterfinals (seeding determined by pool standings). The two best third place finishers from the pool stages will also move on to the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals begin the knockout round, where a loss would eliminate a team from medal contention. Quarterfinal winners will move on to the semifinals, which will ultimately decide the teams playing in the Gold and Bronze Medal matches. The loser of the Gold Medal match will win the Silver Medal.
Women's Sevens Schedule (August 6-8)
The first two matches of pool play will take place on Saturday, August 6 with the final pool match taking place on Sunday, August 7 in the early afternoon before the quarterfinals kick off that evening. Competition will conclude on Monday, August 8 with semifinal matches being played at 1:30 pm and 2:00 pm ET and the Bronze and Gold Medal matches starting at 5:30 pm and 6:00 pm ET, respectively.
