Bianco Homer, Dominant Pitching Lifts Cards in Battle of the Barrel
May 03, 2022 | Baseball
Louisville defeated Vanderbilt 1-0 on Tuesday night in Nashville.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A Ben Bianco solo home run and nine dominant innings on the mound were enough to give the fifth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team a 1-0 victory over No. 14 Vanderbilt in the annual Battle of the Barrel.
Louisville (32-12) used seven different pitchers, limiting Vanderbilt to just two hits on the night for the Cardinals first shutout of the season.
It was Louisville's first 1-0 victory since defeating James Madison on March 2, 2019 and the first 1-0 victory in which the lone run came on a solo homer since records are available beginning in 2001.
Carter Lohman took the ball first for the Cardinals on Tuesday, working a perfect first inning before running into trouble in the second with the bases loaded. However, the southpaw induced a groundout to get out of the jam.
Riley Phillips (4-1) followed with a pair of scoreless innings of his own, including striking out the first four batters he faced.
Bianco finally got the offense on the board leading off the fifth inning. The fifth-year senior launched a 3-2 pitch deep into the left field bleachers for his 10th homer of the season. Bianco is the fourth Louisville player to reach double-digit long balls on the season, the first time four Cardinals have had at least 10 since 2010.
The Louisville pitching staff would make the one run hold up the rest of the way.
Carson Liggett retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the fifth before handing the ball off to Tate Kuehner.
Vanderbilt (29-14) broke up Louisville's no-hit bid with one out in the fifth and proceeded to load the bases with two away. Kuehner was up to the challenge though, picking up a huge strikeout to strand the baserunners.
Kyle Walter entered in the seventh and worked around a two-out walk for a scoreless inning. Ryan Hawks hit the first batter he faced in the eighth, but Dalton Rushing immediately erased him with a perfect throw to second to catch the runner trying to steal. Hawks then retired the next two batters to send the game to the ninth.
Michael Prosecky took over for the final frame, surrendering a two-out single before a groundball ended things and gave the Cards their sixth consecutive victory.
The seven Louisville pitchers combined to allow just two hits on the night, striking out 14 in the win.
Bianco and Logan Beard finished the night with two hits apiece to lead the UofL offense.
Louisville returns to ACC play this weekend with a road series at Wake Forest. The series gets underway on Friday at 6 p.m. ET in Winston-Salem.
