Cards Lose Lead Late in ACC Championship Opener
May 25, 2022 | Baseball
Louisville was walked off 6-5 by Pitt on Wednesday.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The sixth-ranked and second-seeded University of Louisville baseball team suffered a 6-5 walk-off loss to 11th-seeded Pitt on Wednesday at the 2022 ACC Championship.
Louisville (38-17-1) will not advance out of pool play as Pitt went 2-0 to earn the spot in the semifinal round. The Cardinals will wrap up ACC Championship play against seventh-seeded Georgia Tech on Thursday at 11 a.m. ET.
Garrett Schmeltz got the start on the mound for the Cards on Wednesday and was dominant through the first two innings. The southpaw struck out five of the first seven batters he faced to set a new career high.
Pitt (29-26) finally got to Schmeltz in the third with a two-run homer opening up the scoring.
The Cardinals answered back in the fourth on a Dalton Rushing solo home run. It was the 20th blast of the season for Rushing, making him the first Cardinal to reach 20 since Drew Ellis did so in 2017.
One inning later, Ben Metzinger singled to right field and Ben Bianco avoided the tag at the plate to tie the game up at two apiece. Rushing then followed with his second long ball of the day to put Louisville in front by a pair. The 21 home runs for the junior are the most at UofL since Phil Wunderlich had 21 in 2010.
The Panthers got a run back in the bottom half of the fifth with a solo homer, but Levi Usher responded with one of his own in the sixth to stretch the margin back to two.
Pitt continued to fight back though, plating a run in the seventh one another solo home run and then tying the game in the eighth with a sacrifice fly.
Bianco lined a double into the right-centerfield gap with one out in the ninth, but the Cards were unable to get him home.
The Panthers then got the first two runners on in the bottom half and eventually singled home the winning run with two away to lift them to the victory.
Bianco was 3-for-4 on the day, while Rushing, JT Benson and Noah Smith all had a pair of hits.
