Cardinals Split Doubleheader at Pitt

Louisville and Pitt will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
Louisville (21-6, 7-1 ACC) had its comeback fall just short in an 8-7 loss in the opener before breaking out the bats for a 14-6 victory in the nightcap. The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
The Cardinals found themselves on the wrong end of an 8-2 score heading into the ninth inning of the opening game. Three straight Louisville hitters reached to start the frame and Ben Bianco singled home the first run.
Christian Knapczyk then brought home a second run with a fielder's choice and Ben Metzinger launched a three-run homer to make it a one-run game. The Cardinals had two at-bats with the tying run at the plate, but were unable to finish off the comeback.
The offensive momentum from the ninth inning of game one carried over into the second half of the doubleheader as the Cardinals got rolling right off the bat. With a pair of runners in scoring position and two outs, Jack Payton singled back through the middle to get UofL on the board in the first.
Louisville did more damage with two outs in the third, getting a solo home run from Cameron Masterman before run-scoring hits from Payton and Logan Beard.
Pitt (14-11, 4-6) scratched across two runs in the bottom half of the third on a home run, but the Cards came right back with four more in the fourth.
Masterman and Payton each picked up RBIs and Levi Usher homered to the deepest part of the park to give Louisville a 10-2 lead.
The Cardinals would cruise from there, with Dalton Rushing tacking on a two-run homer in the eighth and Masterman and Rushing adding RBIs in the ninth.
Masterman was 6-for-9 on the day, including a 4-for-4 showing in the second half of the double dip. The senior homered in both games Saturday, giving him nine on the season. Isaac Humphrey, Beard and Metzinger all had four hits.
Jared Poland (2-1) turned in a quality start with three runs allowing in six innings of work.
