Thiaw, Cochran tally goals for Louisville, which remains unbeaten on the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Behind goals from senior Mohamed Thiaw and sophomore Cody Cochran, the No. 8 Louisville men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season with a 2-2 draw against No. 19 Kentucky in the annual Battle of the Bluegrass match on Tuesday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The Cardinals moved to 3-0-1 overall for their best start to a season since registering the same record to open the 2010 campaign. Louisville is unbeaten in seven of the last nine matches against the Wildcats, who also moved to 3-0-1 on the season with Tuesday's draw.
All four goals in the match were scored during a span of 28 minutes in the first half. After scoring the first goal of the night, Louisville surrendered a pair of goals to the visitors before connecting on the equalizer in the final minutes of the opening 45. The Cardinals were the dominant side for much of the evening finishing with a 9-3 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 margin on goal.
Louisville kicked off the scoring in the 14th minute when Thiaw, making his first start of the season, delivered his first goal of 2017 with a successful charge up the center of the box. The chance started with junior Adrien Cabon working the ball down the left side to junior Adam Wilson, who served a high cross near the middle of the box where Thiaw controlled it with the first touch before scoring with his second touch for his 13th career goal. The assists were the first of the season for both Wilson and Cabon.
The Wildcats quickly answered to even the score at 1-1 in the 16th minute after Connor Probert connected on a free kick from 25 yards out finishing in the upper right corner for his first goal. UK gained its first advantage of the night in the 29th minute when Mikkel Pedersen received a crossing pass from Tanner Hummel and scored inside the far right post for his first goal of the season and a 2-1 edge.
Less than 13 minutes later, the Cardinals found the equalizer when Cochran was on the finishing end of a free kick by senior Tim Kubel. Working from the left side of the field, Kubel served the ball into the box where it deflected off a UK defender to Cochran, who redirected it inside the far right post to even the score at 2-2 in the 42nd minute. It was the second career goal for Cochran and the 20th collegiate assist for Kubel.
Following the flurry of activity in the opening 45 minutes, the teams settled in defensively after halftime while combining for just four shots during the final 65 minutes, including just one chance for the road side. Tuesday's match marked the fourth time in an as many outings this season the Cardinals have out-shot their opponent.
Up next, No. 8 Louisville opens its grueling ACC schedule against No. 2 Wake Forest on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
