Schmitt scores fourth goal in last three matches and fifth goal of the season
DURHAM, N.C. - Junior Tate Schmitt connected for the only goal of the match while redshirt freshman Will Meyer anchored the fifth shutout of the season for the road side as the No. 8 Louisville men's soccer team claimed a 1-0 victory against No. 12 Duke on Saturday night at Koskinen Stadium.
Extending their unbeaten streak to five matches, the Cardinals moved to 7-1-2 overall and 3-1-0 in the ACC this season, while the Blue Devils dropped to 7-2-1 and 2-2-0. Louisville improved to 3-0-0 in road games while also winning its third straight match against Duke.
"It was an awesome team effort tonight and a great three points on the road," said Cardinals head coach Ken Lolla. "We showed a lot of character."
The lone goal of the evening came late in the first half when Schmitt beat Blue Devils goalkeeper Will Pulisic inside the near post from along the right side of the box in the 41st minute. Senior Tim Kubel was credited with his third assist of the season after finding Schmitt with a long pass up the right side. Schmitt worked behind the Duke backline to gain control of the ball before patiently attacking for his fifth goal of the season.
Schmitt has scored each of the last three goals for the Cardinals and has four goals in the last three matches overall. Saturday's goal was the second game-winner of the season and the eighth career game-winner for Schmitt, who has 17 goals in this three collegiate seasons.
Meyer, making his second straight start at goalkeeper, finished with four saves for the second straight outing to clinch his first career shutout. Each of Meyer's four stops on Saturday came in the second half as the Blue Devils increased the pressure in search of the equalizer. The Cardinals have three shutouts in their last four matches.
Saturday's match marked the first time in 10 matches this season Louisville has been out-shot by an opponent as Duke finished with a 16-6 advantage in attempts. The Blue Devils also had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal as well as an 8-2 margin in corner kicks.
Up next, No. 8 Louisville will play its second straight ACC road match with a visit to Virginia Tech on Friday at 5 p.m., ET. The game in Blacksburg, Virginia will be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Network, including Fox Sports South.
