Junior delivers two goals and one assist as Cardinals win third straight match with 4-0 triumph
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Tate Schmitt scored two goals and added an assist to propel the No. 10 Louisville men's soccer team to a big second half performance in Friday night's 4-0 victory against Boston College at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The Cardinals connected for all four goals in a span of 28 minutes in the second half as Schmitt had the first and last goals in that stretch. With its third consecutive win overall, Louisville improved to 6-1-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in the ACC. The visiting Eagles dropped to 3-5-0 overall and 0-3-0 in ACC matches.
Schmitt has three goals this season and 15 career goals for the Cardinals to go with nine collegiate assists, including three in 2017. Joining in on the scoring barrage for Louisville was sophomore Cherif Dieye, who delivered his second goal of the season and added an assist.
Senior Tim Kubel added his team-leading fourth goal of the season for the Cardinals, who produced their highest scoring performance since a 6-0 win against Belmont on Oct. 4, 2016. Junior Adam Wilson chipped in with an assist for the fifth straight match.
Defensively, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jake Gelnovatch had a pair of saves as Louisville registered its second straight clean sheet and its fourth shutout of the season. The four-goal margin was the largest for the Cardinals in against an ACC foe since earning a 6-1 win over Virginia on Sept. 24, 2016.
After neither side was able to create many significant scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes, Louisville gained command early in the second half when Schmitt delivered a beautiful finish in the 47th minute for the 1-0 advantage. Wilson started the chance with a cross into the box, where Schmitt controlled the ball off his chest before turning to his right and scoring inside the right post with a left-footed strike.
The Cardinals added to the lead in the 67th minute after Dieye connected with his right foot from 15 yards. Schmitt corralled a deflected ball in the box and dribbled across the top of the 18 before passing into space along the left side where Dieye finished inside the left post for the 2-0 advantage.
A little more than three minutes later, Kubel extended the margin to 3-0 with his second goal of the week. Dieye pushed the ball up the left side of the field before serving the ball across the box to the right side to Kubel, who fired inside the far left post in the 70th minute.
Louisville capped the scoring in the 75th minute after Schmitt pounced on a mistake by Boston College goalkeeper Antonio Chavez Borrelli. Kubel directed the ball into the center of the box on a corner kick where Chavez Borrelli moved into an open space and pulled the ball out of the air with both hands. However, the freshman was unable to maintain control dropping the ball behind him near the goal line before Schmitt moved up the center of the box and scored into the open net.
The Cardinals finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots marking the eighth time in as many matches this season they have out-shot their opponent. Louisville also had a 5-2 edge in shots on goal, while the Eagles had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Up next, No. 10 Louisville concludes its three-match homestand at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium on Tuesday at 7 p.m., ET against USF.
