Thiaw, Kubel and Dieye score goals as Cardinals finish with 25-2 edge in shots
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A trio of Cardinals scored goals as the No. 10 Louisville men's soccer team registered its third shutout of the season with Tuesday night's 3-0 victory against IUPUI at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Seniors Mohamed Thiaw and Tim Kubel and sophomore Cherif Dieye connected for goals for Louisville, which controlled the full 90 minutes to improve to 5-1-1 on the season. The Cardinals finished with a 25-2 advantage in shots and a 15-2 edge in corner kicks against the Jaguars, who dropped to 0-6-0 overall.
Both Thiaw and Kubel scored their goals of the season, while Dieye's goal was his first of 2017. Redshirt freshman Jake Gelnovatch did not face a shot on goal as Louisville did not surrender any significant scoring chances for the visitors.
The scoring started in the 21st minute when Thiaw converted on a corner kick chance with a header inside the right post from five yards away. Junior Adam Wilson created the opportunity by sending his corner kick from the right side across the box near the far post, where junior Tate Schmitt headed back to the right side to Thiaw, who finished it for his 15th collegiate goal in two seasons with the Cardinals. Each of Thiaw's three goals this season have come in the last four matches.
After maintaining the one-goal lead into halftime, Louisville extended the advantage to 2-0 in the 51st minute after Kubel converted on a penalty kick. Schmitt was taken down inside the 18-yard box by a Jaguars defender setting up the chance for Kubel, who delivered his 18th career goal.
The home side added its final goal of the night in the 76th minute when Dieye delivered a right-footed strike from 23 yards. After taking a pass from freshman Hamam El-Fitouri from beyond the 18-yard box, Dieye worked around an IUPUI defender and scored inside the right post for his sixth collegiate goal. The assist was the first of the season for El-Fitouri.
The 25 shots for Louisville on Tuesday was the most since attempting 26 shots in a 6-0 win against Belmont on Oct. 4, 2016. The +23 margin in shots (25-2) for the Cardinals was their highest in a match since finishing with a 32-7 edge in shots against Marquette on Sept. 26, 2008.
Up next, No. 10 Louisville continues its three-match homestand at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m., ET against Boston College.
