Kubel, Gelnovatch Lead Cardinals in Shutout Win Over Butler

Kubel scores fifth career game-winning goal and Gelnovatch earns first collegiate shutout
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Tim Kubel connected for his 16th career goal and redshirt freshman Jake Gelnovatch registered his first shutout as the No. 9 Louisville men's soccer team knocked off No. 25 Butler 1-0 on Monday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Three days after registering a season-opening victory against UC Irvine, the Cardinals improved to 2-0-0 for the first time since 2013 as they handed the Bulldogs (1-1-0) their first loss. Louisville, which also held Butler without a goal in a home draw last season, moved to 24-9-6 all-time at Lynn Stadium, including an 11-6-1 mark against ranked foes.
Kubel provided the lone goal of the night in the 39th minute as the All-American defender received a crossing pass along the right side of the 18-yard box from junior Tate Schmitt and delivered a sliding shot off the left post and into the goal. The goal was the first of the season for Kubel and the fifth career game-winner for the native of Stuttgart, Germany. The assist was the first of the season and the seventh of the career for Schmitt.
The goal from Kubel proved to be enough as Gelnovatch turned away four shots to anchor the first clean sheet of the season for the Cardinals, who had 10 shutouts last season. Louisville capped the match with a 12-8 advantage in shots, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The home side also held a 6-2 margin in corner kick chances.
Up next, No. 9 Louisville takes to the road for the first time this season with a visit to Georgia State on Friday at 7:30 p.m., ET.
