Young scores at 89:37 as Cardinals close preseason with 1-1 draw at Lynn Stadium
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Watterson Young connected on a header in the final seconds to lift the No. 9 Louisville men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against Oakland on Saturday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium in the third and final preseason match for the Cardinals.
With Louisville facing the one-goal deficit, freshman Ziyad Fekri served the ball deep inside the box to Young, who directed it inside the left post from eight yards away for the equalizer at 89:37. The goal capped a furious attack late in the match for the Cardinals, who rested many of their projected starters allowing for increased minutes for underclassmen.
The two sides played through a scoreless first half before the visiting Golden Grizzlies moved ahead in the 61st minute when Austin Ricci scored on a free kick for the 1-0 lead. From 25 yards out, Ricci's free kick worked through heavy traffic before finishing inside the far right post. After Young's tying goal in the final seconds, the teams did play any extra time ending the match at 90 minutes.
Oakland finished with a 12-7 edge in shots, including a 6-3 advantage in attempts on goal. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jake Gelnovatch had five saves while playing all 90 minutes for the Cardinals.
Up next, No. 9 Louisville will open its 2017 regular season schedule against UC Irvine on Friday at 7:30 p.m., ET at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals will then host No. 25 Butler on Monday, Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m., at Lynn Stadium.
