Cardinals Win Preseason Opener Against Lipscomb

Dieye scores in the 12th minute while Meyer and Gelnovatch combine for shutout in goal
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Cherif Dieye delivered the only goal of the match as the No. 9 University of Louisville men's soccer team opened its preseason slate with a 1-0 victory against Lipscomb on Saturday night at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Dieye teamed with freshman Izaiah Jennings to produce the decisive goal in the 12th minute of action. After gaining possession from Dieye near the middle of the Cardinals attacking end of the field, Jennings returned the ball to his teammate inside the 18 where Dieye scored inside the left post from 12 yards.
The goal from Dieye proved to be enough as redshirt freshmen goalkeepers Will Meyer and Jake Gelnovatch combined for the shutout. Meyer turned away the only shot he faced during the first 45 minutes, while Gelnovatch stopped the only shot he encountered in the final 45 minutes to clinch the victory.
"I thought it was a good first match for us in that we got a result and we were able to get a lot of guys minutes," said Cardinals head coach Ken Lolla. "We made the early goal stand by getting the shutout and winning the game, so it's something to build on as we move forward."
The Cardinals closed the match with a 13-6 advantage in shots against the Bisons, including a 4-2 in shots on goal. A total of 22 different players saw action in Saturday's match for Louisville, including eight true freshmen.
On Friday night, the Louisville men's soccer team opened its weekend with the fifth annual Kickoff Banquet in the Brown and Williamson Club at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium on Friday night. With a crowd of more than 200 in attendance, the event featured the introduction of the 2017 Cardinals, video chats with UofL alumni and Chicago Fire players Stefan Cleveland and Daniel Johnson, interviews with current Cardinals Tim Kubel, Mohamed Thiaw and Tate Schmitt, honoring of Alumnus of the Year Kyle Rice and a state of the program address from head coach Ken Lolla.
Up next, the Cardinals will play their second preseason match against No. 7 Indiana on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., ET at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. Louisville will close its three-match exhibition schedule against Oakland on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 7:30 p.m., at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.
