Freshman cut deficit in half in 51st minute; penalty kick early in the second half proved to be game-winner
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Despite the third goal of the season from freshman Cherif Dieye, the No. 4 Louisville men's soccer team was unable to overcome a two-goal deficit in Saturday night's 2-1 road loss to No. 7 Wake Forest at Spry Stadium.
Dieye's goal in the 51st minute cut the deficit in half for the Cardinals (9-3-2, 4-1-1 ACC), who dropped to 4-3-0 against ranked opponents this season. The game-winning goal for the Demon Deacons (10-2-2, 4-1-1 ACC) was a successful penalty kick from Ian Harkes in the 47th minute marking the second straight loss for Louisville where a penalty kick served as the deciding goal.
"Our challenging schedule is providing some tough lessons," said Louisville head coach Ken Lolla. "It's our hope those lessons will serve us well the rest of the season."
Wake Forest opened the scoring Saturday night when Jacori Hayes connected from 10 yards out following a free kick chance for the home side. Sam Raben gathered the free kick inside the box before feeding to Hayes, who finished inside the right post in the 24th minute for his fifth goal of the season.
Following halftime, the advantage for the Demon Deacons doubled to 2-0 at 46:55 in the contest after Harkes successfully converted the penalty kick for his third goal of the season. On Tuesday night, No. 9 Indiana scored on a penalty kick early in the second half to break a 1-1 tie in its 2-1 victory over Louisville.
Four minutes after Wake Forest gained its two-goal cushion, the Cardinals broke through for their only goal of the night when Dieye scored from 18 yards away at the 50:55 mark in the match. After gaining possession of the ball near midfield, Dieye pushed into the attacking zone before tucking his shot inside the left post. The three goals for Dieye rank second on the team matching the total by sophomore Tate Schmitt.
Louisville continued its pressure in pursuit of the game-tying goal firing six shots in the final 27 minutes of the match, but none found the net. Overall, the two sides finished with 11 shots each, while Wake Forest had a 7-3 advantage in shots on-goal. The match featured just three total corner kicks, including two for the Demon Deacons.
Up next, No. 4 Louisville returns to the friendly confines of Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium to host Ohio State in a non-conference match Tuesday at 7 p.m., ET.
