Traditions

To unify one of the nation's most passionate fan bases, the University of Louisville Athletics Department launched a department-wide slogan, "Louisville First, Cards Forever," a campaign that was unveiled on March 1, 2012.

Louisville is home to one of the most successful intercollegiate athletics programs in the nation. The Cardinals boast a number of team and individual national championships, more than 50 BIG EAST team titles (combined regular season and tournament) since joining the league in 2005 and more than 300 All-America honorees.

What's Set Louisville Apart

  • In 2011-2012, Louisville was the only Division I school to have all EIGHT teams in the NCAA postseason in football, volleyball, women's soccer, men's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, and softball.
  • Louisville was also the ONLY NCAA Division I school in 2011-2012 to earn wins in the NCAA Volleyball, Women's Soccer, Men's Soccer, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Softball, and Baseball Tournaments.
  • Since the creation of the BCS in 1998-99, Louisville is the ONLY school in the nation to make it to a BCS bowl game, a Men's Final Four, a Women's Final Four, a soccer College Cup and a men's or women's College World Series. Louisville was national runner-up in the 2009 Women's Final Four and 2010 Men's Soccer College Cup, won the 2007 Orange Bowl, and participated in the 2012 Men's Final Four and 2007 College World Series.
  • The Cardinals earned a school-record 10 BIG EAST Conference Championships during the 2011-2012 season, the most of any league member that season.
  • Louisville finished 21st in the Capital One Cup and 32nd in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup in 2012. View the full release and Louisville's finishes in the Sports Directors' Cup here.
  • A league-best seven Louisville student-athletes were recipients of 2012 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognizes academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
  • Louisville is ONE OF JUST 13 institutions to appear in a Bowl Championship Series Game (2007), the NCAA Men's Final Four (nine times), NCAA Women's Final Four (2009), and Men's College World Series (2007).

The #L1C4 Campaign
The success of Louisville's teams contributes to a sense of pride in the community across the nation and throughout the Commonwealth. The Cardinal logo embodies the passion the fans have for the University with the hope that the Louisville First, Cards Forever slogan now becomes synonymous with the University and Cardinal athletics.

Louisville First, Cards Forever builds off a message from men's basketball head coach Rick Pitino, who stated that he expects his team to play for the name on the front of the jersey, and not be concerned about the name on the back.

"The pride we have in our University goes beyond the championships and embodies the commitment we have made to all of our student-athletes and fans," Vice President/Director of Athletics Tom Jurich said. "Our student-athletes want to play for the name on the front of the jersey, and our fans are loyal Cardinal followers. We are so proud of our student-athletes for what they have accomplished on and off the field. They have represented this University with class and dignity."

The department has produced state-wide billboards, merchandise, social media components, as well, as print, radio and television ads to promote this unified message.
