NCAA Volleyball Championship Notes
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With only a month until the nation's best volleyball descends on the Derby City, the University of Louisville is igniting their final 30-day countdown to the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship finals by welcoming three-time Olympic gold medalist and former Stanford standout, Kerri Walsh Jennings to Louisville.
Walsh Jennings will be the featured guest during an open house event on Monday, November 12 at 6:00 p.m. ET in the Brown and Williamson Club at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The event is free and open to the public.
"Coming off an Olympic year where women dominated the medal stand, Kerri's world class talent and character as a former national champion student-athlete and three-time gold medalist is unprecedented," said Julie Hermann, Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director. "What a privilege to have her in Louisville."
Walsh Jennings will sign autographs and be available for fan photos during the open house from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will also be an excellent opportunity for fans to purchase all-session tickets to the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship finals coming to the KFC Yum! Center on December 13 & 15. All remaining lower level seats will be available for purchase in additional to upper level ticket packages.
The open house will also include appearances by the 12th-ranked University of Louisville Volleyball team and Louisville mascot, Louie, a photo booth, and fun kid's games.
Walsh Jennings, a 6-2 hitter, won two NCAA national championships while at Stanford University (1996 and 1997) and became only the second player in NCAA history to receive First-Team All-American honors all four seasons (1996-1999). She competed with the U.S.A. women's indoor national team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney before teaming with former Long Beach State star Misty May-Treanor to win Olympic gold at Athens in 2004, Beijing in 2008, and London in 2012.
"Kerri is an extraordinary role model for women everywhere," said Louisville Head Coach and current president of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, Anne Kordes. "Having won two NCAA national titles and three Olympic gold medals, she knows exactly what it takes to excel at the highest level. I cannot wait to welcome Kerri and the future Kerri Walsh Jennings' to our city during this month-long celebration of volleyball during the NCAA championship."
While in Louisville, Walsh Jennings is also scheduled to speak to several area schools and meet with members of the media.
Walsh Jennings has been married to fellow professional beach volleyball player Casey Jennings since 2005. She is also mom to two sons, Joey and Sundance, and is expecting her third child in April.
Louisville, who has served as host for more than 50 NCAA and BIG EAST Conference Championship events over the past five years, is hosting their first NCAA national championship in Volleyball. The NCAA women's volleyball semifinal matches will be played on December 13 (7 p.m. ET and 9 p.m. ET) followed by the crowning of the national champion on December 15 (7 p.m. ET) at the KFC Yum! Center. The weekend will also include youth clinics, the AVCA National Coaches' Convention, and many fun fan events.
The full 64-team championship bracket will be announced on November 25 at 4 p.m. ET on ESPNU. For more information on the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, visit www.ncaa.com/volleyball
