The University of Louisville women's volleyball team open the BIG EAST slate when they host the DePaul Blue Demons and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this weekend at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cards will take on Depaul on Friday, Sept. 21, at 7:00 p.m., ET. Then on Sunday, Sept. 23, the Cardinals will face Notre Dame at 2:00 p.m., ET.

DePaul will enter the match against Louisville with an overall record of 5-7 on the season. The Blue Demons have reloaded the roster and brought in seven newcomers for this year. The newcomers include freshman Abbie Fleener, Tyler Graham, Aubree Hord, Callie Huebener, and Randi Leath. Abbie Fleener is related to Coby Fleener who is the rookie tight end for the Indianapolis Colts. The Blue Demons also added two transfer players in sophomore Laure Witt from UT-San Antonio and junior Vesela Zapryanova from Auburn.

The Blue Demons last played in the Loyola Rambler Challenge where they went 2-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of Loyola. Prior to the Rambler Challenge, Vesala Zapryanova and Callie Huebener led the team with 3.22 and 3.03 kills per set, respectively. Aubree Hord ranked number one on the team in assists with 6.00 per set and Laura Witt came in second on the squad with 4.86 assists per set. Rachel Aumann has been protecting the net for DePaul as she averaged .73 blocks per set. Notre Dame will head Cincinnati for a match on Friday before playing Louisville on Sept. 23. The Fighting Irish have an overall record of 7-5 on the season, yet, they have had arguably the toughest schedule so far this year.

Four of the five losses this season have come from teams that are ranked in the AVCA Top 25. The Fighting Irish have suffered defeats to No. 1 Nebraska, No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 USC, and No. 16 San Diego.

This season Notre Dame added a No. 22 ranked freshman class that included Haley Bonneval, Annie Flynn, Taylor Morey, and Hanna Muzzonigro. On Aug. 27, freshman libero Taylor Morey was named as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.

Toni Aluqbue leads the Fighting Irish with 177 kills (3.93/set; .281 hitting percentage) and Jeni Houser ranks second on the team with 164 kills (3.64/set; .318 hitting percentage) this season. Leading the team in assists is Maggie Brindock with a total of 378 and an average of 8.40 per set. Marie Roof has compiled 45 blocks (1.00/set) and Andie Olden has totaled 37 blocks (.90/set) that have given the Irish a firm presence at the net.

Following the matches this weekend the Cardinals will hit the road to face South Florida in Tampa on Sept. 28 and then to Pittsburgh on Sept. 30.

The next home matches will take place on Oct. 6 against Seton Hall, Oct. 7 facing Rutgers, and Oct. 8 against Texas. The match against Seton Hall will be held at Cardinal Arena at 12:00 p.m., ET. The matches against Rutgers and Texas will be held at the KFC Yum! Center at 12:00 p.m., ET and 7:00 p.m., ET.

Be sure not to miss the Post-Match Youth Clinic following Sunday afternoon's match. The Cardinals will be hosting a free volleyball clinic for youth (K-8) on the floor of the KFC Yum! Center after the match against the Irish. Youth will meet the team and Head Coach Anne Kordes, learn basic skills and compete in drills. To participate, all youth must register by completing the participation form Waiverform and turn it in to marketing representatives prior to the start of the clinic.
