The University of Louisville volleyball team opens the 2014 campaign on the road in Minneapolis at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. First up will be against the Badgers of Wisconsin.
The Cardinals will face Wisconsin on Friday night in the first match of the 2014 season. The team was picked to finish third in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches Poll. Senior outside hitter, Ellen Chapman, and sophomore setter, Lauren Carlini, were both first time selections to the Preseason All-Big Ten Volleyball team. The Badgers are coming off a record year as they finished as runner ups in the 2013 NCAA Tournament against Penn State, capping a 28-10 (12-8 Big Ten) season. The team brings back 11 returnees and six starters. Chapman led the squad with 512 kills, averaging 3.5 kills a set. The Badgers lead the series against Louisville with a 3-1 advantage, including last year's 3-0 victory at the North Dakota State Invitational.
The Cardinals will face Minnesota on Saturday night. The Gophers come into the match ranked 12th in the nation by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Along with the national ranking, Minnesota was picked to finished seventh in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches Poll. Senior hitter, Adrianna Nora and sophomore middle blocker, Hannah Tapp, received first time selections to the Preseason All-Big Ten Volleyball team. Minnesota finished 29-7 (15-5 Big Ten) in 2013. Minnesota graduated two of their top hitters and will rely on returners, Daly Santana and Nora to lead the team. Minnesota leads the series, 3-2 after last year's 3-0 victory in the Bluegrass Battle Tournament.
Notre Dame will be the fourth team in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge with matches against Minnesota and Wisconsin. The squad returns nine from a 13-18 (7-13 ACC) first season in the ACC last year. The Fighting Irish return one of their top hitters from 2013, senior Jeni Houser, who was second on the team with 311 kills.
