Freshman Lola Arslankova had 13 kills and three digs but it was not enough as the University of Louisville fell 25-12, 25-22, 25-15 to Cincinnati in BIG EAST Volleyball action Friday night at Fifth Third Arena.
"We have to take this and use it down the line," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin.
U of L falls to 12-9 and 5-3 in the BIG EAST and UC improves to 16-8 and 7-1 in league play. The Cardinals hit .153 and were aced seven times. Ten service errors did little to help the cause. UC hit .311 and outblocked the Cards 7.5 to 4.0. In the first set, U of L stayed close early but an 11-2 run by the Bearcats put UC up 21-10. U of L would score just twice more as the Cardinals fell 25-12. U of L hit a frigid .000 and was aced five times. U of L was led by Lola Arslanbekova's five kills.
In the second set, U of L ran out to an early lead at 11-7 and forced a Bearcat timeout. UC scrambled back to tie at 17 and take its first lead at 19-18 and never trailed again. U of L used both its timeouts to try to stop the rally but UC got to set point on a kill by Becca Refenes and a Justine Landi error gave UC the set. Lola Arslanbekova's eight kills and .727 hitting wasn't enough to rescue the Cards. UC's Missy Harpenau led with six kills.
In the final set, U of L fell behind early at 11-6 and was forced to call timeout. UC had an 8-2 run to put the game out of reach. The Cardinals put together a 5-1 run but it was too little, too late.
