Lola Arslanbekova had 20 kills with Gwen Rucker pitching in 11 to lead the University of Louisville to a 3-2 win over St. John's in Queens Friday afternoon in BIG EAST volleyball action. The Cards won 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 19-25 and 15-9.

"This was our fourth five-setter and it was a great opportunity to win one of those, because you can't create that kind of pressure in practice.," said U of L Anne Kordes. "Hats off to the St. John's, they played aggressively and made a fantastic turnaround. "

The Cards improve to 17-3 and 6-1 in the BIG EAST. St. John's is now 17-5 and 4-2.

U of L hit .286 in the first set and got seven points from SJU service errors but .371 hitting by the Red Storm and an 8-1 run gave the home team the 25-21 win. Lola Arslanbekova paced the Cards with four kills.

In the second set, U of L used a 4-1 run to go up 14-9 and then held off a determined Red Storm. SJU hit three straight to come within three at 21-18 and Kordes called timeout. The Cards regrouped nicely and ran off four of the last five points of the set for the 25-19 win. U of L got four kills on six swings from Rucker and Hannah Kvitle had two aces. The Cards hit .424 in the set and had three blocks.

The Cards survived a 6-1 run and St. Johns hit .-114 in the third set for the 25-20 win. U of L had a 5-1 run late in the set to get to set point. Two errors by Aleksandra Wachowicz gave U of L the win. Brooke Mattingly had two kills for the Cards.

After trading points the whole set, SJU went on a 7-1 run for the 25-19 win in the fourth . Wachowicz continued to be a problem for U of L, notching seven kills in the set. U of L was outhit .159 to .250.

 

 

In the fifth set, U of L scooted out to a 9-5 lead and then endured a 3-1 run by St. John's but Gwen Rucker had a block, Lola Arslanbekova had a kill and Kaitlynn James had an ace as the seniors ganged up on the Red Storm for the 15-9 win.

The Cards head to UConn for a 2 p.m. Sunday match as BIG EAST play continues.
