Lola Arslanbekova had 20 kills and 14 digs and became the all-time kill career leader in school history as she led the University of Louisville to a 25-20, 25-13, 25-18 sweep over Rutgers in BIG EAST volleyball action Sunday afternoon at the KFC Yum! Center.
"It was a great two BIG EAST wins and now we have to rest and get our legs back under us to face No. 9 Texas Monday night," said U of L head coach Anne Kordes. " It was a great crowd today on a Sunday and the Pink Out Dig for the Cure is a great crowd. It was a fantastic opportunity to get everybody some match experience, especially for as hard as everyone has been working."
Louisville moves to 16-2 and 5-1 in the BIG EAST. The Cards hit .256 with eight blocks and two aces. The Knights hit just .000 with three blocks. Emily Juhl had four blocks and as did Brooke Mattingly, who also had six kills. Caitlin Welch had 15 digs. The Knights were led by Sarah Schmid's seven kills with two blocks.
U of L used as 7-2 run to go up 12-7 in the first set. Rutgers cut the margin to two at 16-14 but could get no closer before falling 25-20. Rutgers did little to help their own cause, hitting .071 and not getting any blocks. U of L was led by Lola Arslanbekova's four kills and Brooke Mattingly's three blocks as the Cards posted .250 hitting percentage.
U of L got into a rhythm and put together a 9-1 run to go up 19-12 in the second set and extended it to a 15-2 run for the 25-13 win for the Cards. U of L hit .250 and RU was hitting .000. Lola had eight kills in the set, including the kill that made her the all-time kill leader in school history.
"I want to congratulate Lola for setting the all-time kill record," said Kordes. You get so few opportunities in a lifetime to see someone like her dominate for four years. On top of that, she is having a phenomenal senior season. She was second team All-American last year and she has come back wanting even more."
U of L hit .270 which helped squelch a Knight comeback when they had a 4-0 run to come within three at 21-18 but U of L reeled off four unanswered points to take the set and match.
U of L faces No. 9 Texas on Monday at 7 p.m. at KFC Yum! Center.
