Freshman outside hitter Lola Arslanbekova had 21 kills and three blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Liberty in the final match of the Cardinal Classic Saturday night in Cardinal Arena.
U of L improves to 6-3 with the 25-16, 25-22, 19-25, 25-22 win. Liberty falls to 4-5. Libero Lindsey Mango joined Arslanbekova on the All-Cardinal Classic team. Liberty's Kallie Corbin who had 38 assists and Nicki Scripko, who had 20 kills represented the Flames on the all-tournament team.
"We distributed the ball better and it kept them guessing," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "When our blocking gets on track like that, we can make runs."
U of L hit .361 for the match and outblocked its opponents 12-5. Liberty aced the Cards five times but recorded nine service errors. Justine Landi added 12 kills and four blocks to the Cardinal tally with Anastasia Artemeva chipping in 10. Lecia Brown led all blockers with seven.
In the first set, U of L ran out to a 17-10 lead and then added a 4-0 run late to win 25-16. The Cardinals hit .400 in that set to the Flames' .000. The two teams stayed close in the second set, but after tying at 17, Liberty got strong serving from Rebecca Warren to put them up 21-18. The Flames got to set point at 24-20 on an ace by Chelaine McCarty. The Cardinals managed to score twice more before Nicki Scripko put down a ball for set point for the Flames.
After the break, U of L hitting heated up to .517 for the third set for the 25-19 win. In the final set, U of L had an early five point lead and kept Liberty at bay with .375 hitting and pulled out a 25-22 win.
In the first match of the day, Sondra Parys had 21 kills and two blocks to lead the University of Toledo to a 3-2 win over the University of Toledo Louisville hit .277 and was led by Lola Arslanbekova's 16 kills and two blocks. Toledo hit .230 and got 18 kills from Amber DeWeerdt.
