Louisville Collects Five NCAA Regional Marks on Day Three of Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas - The nationally ranked University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams earned five NCAA regional marks, won an event title and set a school record on day three of the 82nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays hosted by the University of Texas on Friday.

"I am really proud of the performance put forth today," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "We have had a great showing during the first two days and will look to finish strong tomorrow."

The Cardinal men collected four NCAA regional marks led by redshirt junior Tone Belt and senior Rudon Bastian in the long jump and sophomore Josh Greenwald and redshirt junior Steven Hnat in the discus.

Belt placed second in section B of the long jump with a leap of 24-02.50 (7.38m), while Bastian finished two spots behind in fourth with a mark of 24-01 (7.34m).

Greenwald took third in section B of the discus with a heave of 174-7 (53.21m), while Hackney finished fifth with a toss of 170-10 (52.08m).

On the women's side, junior Jere' Summers finished third in section A of the discus with an NCAA Mideast Regional qualifying mark of 173-08 (52.94m), the second best throw in the NCAA this season. Summers also secured a regional bid with a third place finish in the hammer throw on Thursday.

Freshman Khadija Abdullah won the section B shot put after throwing a personal best 52-02 (15.90m) and improving her mark on the NCAA descending order list nine spots to fifth entering the weekend.

 

 

Junior Rachel Gehret finished third in section A of the high jump, clearing 5-10.75 (1.80m) and reaching NCAA regional qualifying status for the second time this season.

Junior Saravia Richardson ran a school-record setting time of 11.69 in the 100-meter prelims to finish 12th overall.

The Cardinals continue the Texas Relays on Saturday and will also have athletes competing at the Mike Poehlein Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. Following this weekend's meets, the Cards will return to action on April 8-11 at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
