LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Behind three individual titles on Saturday, the University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams are each in first place after day one of competition at the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Stiles Field House on the campus of the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio.

The women (42 points), who lead West Virginia by a 12-point margin, continued to hit their stride at the right time, receiving strong performances on the track and from the field athletes. The throwers swept the top three spots of the weight throw, with D'Ana McCarty capturing her third-straight indoor conference title in the event, with a mark of 22.09m/72-5.75. Her mark was a facility record. Amashi Kendall took runner-up (19.68m/64-7), while true freshman Patrice Gates placed third (18.33m/60-1.75).

Charachesicia Lockhart captured the women's program's second long jump title, taking first in the event with a leap of 6.01m/19-8.75. Lockhart entered the event tied for the 15th longest jump nationally (6.22m/20-5).

On the men's side, Wesley Smith guided the men to a current first-place result (43 points), with a title in the long jump. It is the sixth time in program history the men have won the indoor long jump title. Smith earned the crown behind a mark of 7.59m/24-11. Seon Powell placed third, with a leap of 7.13m/23-4.75, giving the men six more points.

Saravia Richardson bolstered the women's scores, with a strong first day. In the 60m preliminaries, she finished runner-up after completing the race in 7.39. Margret Harris, who also qualified for the finals in the event, was clocked in the event at 7.47. Richardson then took third in the 200m after a time of 24.30, advancing to Sunday's final.

Competing in just her second pentathlon, Gabrielle Jackson set the pace early for the Cardinals. She finished in the top five in three of the five disciplines, posting a fourth-place finish in the 60m hurdles and fifth-place showings in the shot up and the long jump. Overall, she finished fourth, collecting five team points.

Kyle Gann also had a noteworthy performance in the pole vault, breaking the school record for the second time this year after clearing 5.10m/16-8.75.

The Cardinal men distance runners populated the top 10 in the 5,000m, as Matt Hughes took third, while Matt Bruce finished fifth, and true freshman Tyler Byrne placed ninth.

Weston Banks rounded out the men's top placewinners, as he registered a fourth-place finish in the weight throw.

Other athletes who advanced through their events' preliminaries consist of Ahlivia Spencer (fifth in the 500m), Sirron Warren (eighth in the 500m), Howard Shepard, III (eighth in the 800m) and Luke Lovelace (11th in the mile).
