LOUISVILLE, Ky. - On day one of competition at the Kentucky Track and Field Invitational at E.J. Nutter Field House, senior D'Ana McCarty led the University of Louisville men's and women's track and field teams with a first-place finish in the weight throw.

McCarty, the two-time defending weight throw national champion, now has won nine-straight weight throw competitions, dating back to the first meet of the 2010 indoor season. The Indianapolis native dominated the competition, beating her closest competitor by more than a meter, as she took first with a throw of 69-3.25/21.11m.

The women's team, which earned a preseason rank of No. 18 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, also received strong performances from Charachesicia Lockhart and Patrice Gates. Lockhart finished third in the triple jump 40-7.75/12.39m. A freshman, Gates, meanwhile, bettered her mark from the first meet of the season in the weight throw by more than a meter, as she finished in fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 58-10.75/17.95m.

On the men's side, senior Neil Angermeier took third in the high jump. Despite clearing the same height - 7-0.25/2.14m - as the first-place finisher, Angermeier had two misses before clearing a career-best height. Newcomer Michael Edwards took fourth in the event (6-10.25/2.09m).

The squads return to action on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 10:30 a.m. The second day of the event opens with men's and women's long jump and the women's high jump.
