LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville track and field teams completed the Kentucky Invitational on Saturday evening at E.J. Nutter Field House in Lexington, as eight additional Cardinals punched their tickets to the BIG EAST Indoor Championships with league qualifying marks.
Charachesicia Lockhart recorded the lone victory of the day, taking first in the triple jump with a leap of 12.22m/40-1.25. Newcomer Malina Simmers followed suit, placing second in the event.
The Cardinal women also made a splash in the high jump competition, populating four places in the top-10 spots. Michelle Theophille took runner-up and recorded the fourth-best indoor high jump mark in school history, clearing 1.79m/5-10.50. Behind Megan Schubert's fifth-place showing, Kim Cardeiro ensured a trip to the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in the event after soaring over the bar at 1.71m/5-7.25.
"We made pretty good progress as a team," associate head coach Dale Cowper said. "I think we really had some impressive performances today, especially from Michelle Theophille in the high jump. It's great to see her back healthy and, with that jump, she's certainly in good company from a school-record standpoint.
"I also thought Madie Davidson and Holly Knight had strong performances on the distance side, and Calvin Arsenault looked great in the hurdles. Right now, it's just about keeping healthy and continuing to improve."
Holly Knight, who was a three-time track All-American at Auburn, made her Cardinal debut and did so in impressive fashion. Knight had BIG EAST qualifying marks in the mile, taking 11th in 5:00.19, and the 3,000m, completing the race in 9:55.36 for a 10th-place finish. Madie Davidson beat out Knight by two places in the 3,000m (eighth) to qualify for the league's championships behind a time of 9:52.69.
Hadassah Bruno (400m) and Ahlivia Spencer (800m) also earned league qualifying marks in their respective events. Spencer was competing in the 800m for the first time collegiately, and she had a ninth-place finish (2:14.69).
In the sprints events, Margret Harris raced to a third-place finish in 7.59 in the 60m preliminaries. Harris, however, did not compete in the 60m finals despite advancing.
On the men's side, Jordon Frazier, Luke Lovelace and Gordon Dooley each earned marks to qualify for the BIG EAST Championships. Frazier had a 400m qualifying time of 49.46. Lovelace and Dooley earned spots in the mile, registering times of 4:13.10 and 4:15.04, respectively.
Freshman Calvin Arsenault, who has already earned a trip to the league championships in the 60m hurdles, continued to excel in the event. In the preliminaries, he took fourth (8.25) and advanced to the finals to place fifth.
In the field events, Brad Vivace, Sam Bombaugh and Isaac Bowling took Nos. 4-6 in the shot put. Bombaugh improved upon his mark from a week ago, posting a toss of 16.06m/52-8.25. Khadija Abdullah took second in the event on the women's side, and Amashi Kendall secured a fourth-place finish.
