The University of Louisville women's tennis team announced the signing of Manuela Velasquez to a National Letter of Intent to continue her tennis career.
Velasquez is from Kew Gardens, NY, went to Laurel Springs High School and has been ranked No. 1 in all the age groups of the Eastern Section as well as being ranked in the Top 10 on Tennisrecruiting.net. She has been a winner of National Open Tournaments.
"We are very excited to add Manuela Velasquez to our team. Manuela is the highest rated player to ever sign with Louisville Women's Tennis," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "She comes from the Eastern section which is one of the toughest sections in the country, a lot of professionals and college All-Americans come from this section. So for us to add her to our team is going to really help our depth and allow us to win more matches in the top 3 positions of the line-up."
Velasquez joins a highly competitive tennis team in the Cardinals.
"Manuela is obviously a very good tennis player but the thing that really excites me about her joining the team is her will to compete," said Beckham. "I talked with a lot of people about Manuela and the consistent thing that kept coming up was that she was a fierce competitor and we desperately need that on our team. She is not going to win every match she plays for us but she also is not going to be intimidated by anyone because she honestly thinks she can beat anyone she plays. She is bringing more to the team than just talent."
