Women's Tennis Earns Two Championships at Wake Forest Invitational

Cardinal women's tennis players Mandy Brown and the doubles pair of Manuela Velasquez and Alex Tachovsky won their flights at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational Sunday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.

"I am really happy with the team's fall results so far. We haven't won this many events in the time I have been with the women's program," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "We are representing Cardinal Athletics extremely well right now. I am very happy for Mandy Brown. She is being rewarded right now for her determination to improve her game. Nobody deserves success more than Mandy Brown. So it is fun to see her doing so well. This is her first singles tournament win of her career, so I am really happy for her."

Mandy Brown won the C Singles flight. She beat Dilara Yurtkuran of UNC Greensboro 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (1) to advance into the winner's bracket. She then defeated Tamara Stanic of Campbell 7-6 (3), 6-4 to gain the semi-finals. She beat Hailey Barrett of West Virginia 6-3, 6-3 to move into the finals. She beat Wake Forest's Karen Forman 7-6, 6-2 for the championship.

The pair of Manuela Velasquez and Alex Tachovsky won their first match against Maria Camara and Taylor Casey of Elon 8-0 before beating Annette Rios and Kayla Gammie of UNC Greensboro 8-3. Next up was Emily Mathis and Audrey Wooland of WVU, whom they beat 8-2 and then bested Alexandra Zinn and Natsuko Takayanagi of UNC Charlotte 8-4 for the B Doubles crown.

Tachovsky made it to the D Singles final match as well, having beaten Gabbie Winter of Navy 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and then besting Kayla Gammie of UNC Greensboro 6-1, 6-1. That advanced her to the semi-finals where she beat Lindsey Cable of Stetson 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Her bid for the championship ended when she fell to Caitlin Cridland of Winthrop in the finals.

 

 

Manuela Velasquez advance to the title match in the B Singles, after beating, Radford's Jemma Valls 6-0, 6-0 and then Clare Cox of Appalachian State 6-2, 6-4. She then bested Giovanna Portiolli of Winthrop 6-3, 6-3 but fell in the finals to Elon's Bryn Khoury.
