University of Louisville women's tennis players came out on top as play wrapped up at the 2012 Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational Sunday at the Country Club at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.
In a strange turn of events, Rebecca Shine of Louisville was the singles champion after defeating Cardinal teammate Julia Fellerhoff 7-5, 6-3 in the final match. They entered the brackets with Fellerhoff seeded first and Shine seeded second so while the rankings panned out accurately, it is rare to have teammates end up playing each other.
In doubles, Fellerhoff teamed up with Manuela Velasquez to claim the doubles title after posting a win over Bowling Green's Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland.
"We had a really good weekend. Anytime you come to an event and win both championships, there is not much for me to complain about," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "Julia and Manuela winning the doubles is a great start for them. I think that they can be a really good team. Then we follow that up with Becca beating Julia in the final of the singles. We couldn't have done too much better than we did this weekend. I need to give Becca a special congratulations because she played a great final against Julia. The level of play between the two of them was very high. Becca was just on fire on the difference making points. Both played well and had a very good tournament."
