Women's Tennis Come Up Short to Long Beach State

The No. 71 ranked University of Louisville women's tennis team won the doubles point but found themselves on the wrong end of three 3-set matches in singles as the No. 37 ranked Long Beach State extended its home winning streak to seven matches with a 5-2 at the Rhodes Tennis Center in Long Beach.

The Cardinals (10-5, 1-0 Big East) took the first point of the day with doubles victories at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine beat Ebba Unden and Karolina Rozenberg 8-5 at No. 1. The No. 3 pair of Manuela Velasquez and Mandy Brown combined forces to beat Anne-Sophie Willems and Anna Jeczmionka 8-4. Sarah Cantlay and Klaudia Malenovska helped LBSU (11-3, 4-1 Big West) avoid the sweep by beating Rebecca Bodine and Stefanie Villajuan 8-2 at the No. 2 spot.

Behind 1-0, the 49ers tied it up as Karolina Rozenberg beat Stefanie Villajuan, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4. Freshman Anne-Sophie Willems then gave LBSU the 2-1 lead behind a 6-1, 6-4 win over Rebecca Bodine. However, Louisville came back to tie the match up at 2-2 as Sarah Cantlay fell to Manuela Velasquez, 6-4, 7-5, snapping her seven-match winning streak.

 

 

Nearly 75 minutes later, Anna Jeczmionka broke the tie with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 victory over Mandy Brown at No. 5. Ebba Unden then followed suit and clinched the win for the 49ers with her 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Julia Fellerhoff at No. 1. Senior Klaudia Malenovska claimed the final LBSU point of the day with her win over Rebecca Shine, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3) at No. 2.
