The University of Louisville women's tennis team dropped the doubles point but came out swinging in singles to take a 4-2 upset win over Big Ten foe #41 Minnesota at a neutral site Saturday night in Blacksburg, Va.
"What a great win," said U of L head coach Mark Beckham. "We really responded well after losing a heartbreaker to Virginia Tech yesterday. This win is really going to help us as the season goes on. To beat the 41st team in the country this early in the season is going to help us mentally through the rest of our schedule."
The Cardinals stumbled in doubles despite Rebecca Shine and Becky Bodine beating Aria Lambert and Doron Muravnik 8-3 at No. 3. However, Mandy Brown and Stefanie Villajuan were downed 8-3 at No. 2. The No. 1 pair of Julia Fellerhoff and Manuela Velasquez battled Natalia Pintusava and Tereza Brichacova into a tiebreaker but fell 8-7 (5) to give the Gophers the doubles point.
The Cardinals, 5-1, rebounded in singles taking the top four positions. Julia Fellerhoff beat Pintusava 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1. Rebecca Shine rolled at No. 2, taking down Brichacova 6-3, 6-0.
