Softball beats Indiana 12-0; Falls to Eastern Kentucky 6-4

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team defeated Indiana 12-0 in five innings and lost to Eastern Kentucky 6-4 at Ulmer Stadium Sunday in the 2002 Louisville Fall Invitational.

In the Indiana game, the Cardinals capitalized on 16 hits, including five doubles and two home runs. got on the scoreboard early in the first inning when Sara Bausher doubled and scored on Keola Calderon's RBI single.

The Cards put up a four-spot in the second inning when Aja Sherman doubled. Alma Navarette singled to set up Shannon Nord's two-run double to give U of L a 3-0 lead. Nord scored on a single by Nicole Sparks. Bausher's second double of the game brought in Sparks to give Louisville a 5-0 lead.

U of L added five more runs in the third inning when Lacy Woods singled to lead off the second inning and moved to second on Lisa McMillan's sacrifice bunt. Kacey Yourous, who entered as a pinch runner for Woods, moved to third on a single by Sherman and scored on Navarette's RBI hit. Amy Summers singled, scoring Sherman and Navarette moved to second on an Indiana error. Bausher singled to bring in Summers. Calderon's double brought home Bausher to give Louisville a 10-0 lead.

McMillan and Sherman hit back-to-back home runs to give the Cards the 12-0 win.

Bausher finished the game batting 3 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Sherman also went 3 for 3, scored two runs and drove in one.

Louisville starter Jessica Rak tossed the shutout scattering two hits in five innings. Indiana starter Heather Stillians gave up 12 earned runs and 16 hits in 3.1 innings.

In the game against Eastern Kentucky, the Colonels jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Diana Barreras led off the game with a double and scored when Elise Burch reached on a Louisville error. Burch came home on a hit by Amy Herrington to give EKU a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals responded in the fourth when Kacey Yourous drew a walk, moved to second when Kristi Rozelle reached on a fielder's choice, took third on Nord's single and scored when Nicole Sparks singled to load the bases. Bausher's three-run double gave the Cards a 4-2 lead.

EKU pulled within one in the sixth when Jackie Hucul singled down the left field line and stole second. Diana Barreras entered the game as a pinch runner and immediately stole third and came home when Jessica Soto grounded out to make the score 4-3.

The Colonels pulled ahead in the top of the seventh when Barreras doubled, stole third and scored when Burch reached on an error to tie the game at 4-4. Jennifer Norris singled to move Burch to third base and set up Amy Herrington's RBI single and give the Colonels a 5-4 lead. EKU added an insurance run on Bethany Herrington's RBI for the 6-4 game.

Offensively, Sparks finished the game batting 3-for-3. Louisville starter Krystle Herold allowed six runs, only one earned, on 10 hits. EKU starter Jessica Soto allowed four runs, none earned, on 10 hits.

Eastern Kentucky defeated Indiana 7-3 in the final game of the day.

The Louisville Fall Invitational will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 29 as Eastern Kentucky and Indiana meet at 11:00 a.m.; Louisville and Indiana play at 1:00 p.m. and Louisville will meet Eastern Kentucky at 3:00 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.
