The No. 21/22 University of Louisville softball team will open the 2010 season at the Marriott Houston Hobby Classic Feb. 12-14. The Cards open the tournament Friday against Kansas at 11 a.m. and face No. 15/17 Baylor at 3 p.m. Saturday's slate features a second game against Baylor at 1 p.m. with a matchup against host - and former Conference USA foe - Houston at 5 p.m. Louisville will close the tournament against No. 14/16 Ohio State Sunday morning.
Louisville is coming off of a record-setting 48-11 season and its sixth consecutive NCAA tournament bid. Seven starters and 11 letterwinners return from that team including All-Americans Melissa Roth and Kristen Wadwell. Roth led the Cards with a .444 batting average, 16 home runs, 64 runs and 53 RBI. Wadwell posted a 41-10 record, finishing second in the nation in wins, and a 1.69 ERA in 311.0 innings of work.
Junior Chelsea Bemis (.378, 8 HR, 46 RBI) joins Roth and Wadwell as returning All-BIG EAST First Team selections while senior Vanessa James (.309, 44R), junior Colby Wherry (.366, 35 RBI) and sophomore Kristin Austin (.343, 40R, 17 SB) were second team honorees.
