LOUISVILLE, Ky. - -
The ninth-ranked University of Louisville softball team improved to 46-2 and 16-2 in BIG EAST play with a pair of shutout victories over Georgetown Saturday at Ulmer Stadium. The Cards defeated the Hoyas 4-0 in the first game and completed the sweep with an 11-0, five inning win in the nightcap. Louisville will honor seniors Kristin Austin, Tori Collins and Tesha Paysen prior to Sunday's 1 p.m. home finale.
Louisville 4 - Georgetown 0
In game one, junior Katelyn Mann went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBI while senior Tori Collins and sophomore Chelsea Leonard combined to shutout the Hoyas.
Jennifer Esteban led off the bottom of the first with a triple and came home on Katie Keller's sacrifice fly to give the Cards a 1-0 lead in the first.
Louisville used home runs by Jordan Trimble and Mann to tack on three more runs in the fourth. Trimble sent a one-out shot over the left field fence for her third homer of the season to increase the lead to 2-0. Sophomore Maggie Ruckenbrod singled and Mann took her first pitch over the centerfield fence. Mann's second home run of the season gave the Cards a 4-0 lead.
Collins (22-1) got the win, giving up only one hit and striking out three in 5.0 innings. Leonard scattered two hits and struck out three in 2.0 innings of relief.
Lauren O'Leary (8-14) took the loss allowing four earned runs on nine hits and striking out two in 6.0 innings. Taylor Koenig, Sophia Almeida-Gargicevich and Samantha Findling each had a hit for the Hoyas.
Louisville 11 - Georgetown 0 (Five innings)
In game two, freshman Whitney Arion went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and sophomore Caralisa Connell scattered two hits in five innings as the Cards tied a season-high for runs with an 11-0 victory over the Hoyas. Senior Kristin Austin extended her hitting streak to 16 games, which ties a school record set by Coleen Coughlin in 2001 and tied by Katie Keller in 2011.
Louisville got on the scoreboard in the second when Trimble doubled and took third on Mann's flyout. Arion followed with an RBI single.
The Cards used four hits and an error to score six runs in the third. Keller got the inning started with a double. A dropped fly ball sent Keller home and allowed junior Alicja Wolny to reach. Sophomore Taner Fowler ripped an RBI double down the left field line to plate pinch-runner Chrisanna Roberts. Ruckenbrod followed with an RBI single. Freshman Kirsten Straley entered to pinch run for Ruckenbrod and Mann drew a walk to set up Arion's two-run double which made the score 7-0.
U of L tacked on four more runs in the fourth. Keller walked and Wolny singled and Fowler reached on an error to load the bases for Trimble who drew a walk to plate Keller. Mann's fielder's choice saw Wolny safe at the plate. Arion wrapped up the scoring with a two-run double.
Connell (16-1) got the win, scattering two hits and striking out three in 5.0 innings. Keller was 1 for 2 with two runs and Fowler was 1 for 3 with a pair of runs.
Mackensey Carter (4-10) took the loss, giving up seven runs, four earned, on eight hits in 2.1 innings of work. Hannah Slovacek allowed four runs, only one earned, on two hits and struck out one in1.2 innings. Georgetown drops to 19-31 (3-14 BIG EAST).
