BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - -
The No. 23/24 University of Louisville softball team used a season-high 14 hits while Brittany York and Jordan Trimble each drove in four runs as to beat host Indiana 11-0 in six innings Wednesday at the IU Softball Field.
"I was really pleased with our performance today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We could have had a letdown after our long stay out West, but we came to play. I was happy with what I saw both offensively and defensively - this is the way we need to play consistently throughout the season."
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard early, capitalizing on five hits to score four runs in the first inning. Melissa Roth led off the game with a double and Vanessa James followed with a single to place runners on the corners. Roth came home when Alicja Wolny reached on a fielder's choice that saw James safe at second. Chelsea Bemis singled to load the bases for Jordan Trimble's two-run double. Brittany York delivered an RBI single to score Wherry and give Louisville a 4-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Louisville extended its lead to 6-0 behind Roth's two-run homer. Jennifer Esteban led off the frame with a single to set up Roth's team-leading eighth home run of the season.
The Cards tacked on another run in the fifth when Bemis walked, moved to second on Sarah Anderson's
single and came around to score on York's base hit to make it a 7-0 game.
Back-to-back two run doubles by Trimble and York helped the Cards put up another four-spot in the top of the sixth. Hits by James and Wolny and Bemis' fielder's choice loaded the bases as Trimble and York each tallied their third and fourth RBI in the game for the 11-0 final.
Tori Collins (6-2) got the win, allowing only one hit and striking out five in 4.0 innings. Kristen Wadwell shared the shutout, giving up two hits in 2.0 innings of relief. York was 3 for 4 with four RBI and Trimble finished with a 2 for 4, four RBI performance at the plate.
"We had great pitching from both Tori and Kristen," said Pearsall. "Either one of whom could have gone the game by themselves, but we needed to get some work from them during the week."
Monica Wright (2-6) took the loss, surrendering seven earned runs on nine hits and striking out three in 4.0 innings. The Hoosier drop to 6-19 on the season.
