Interview with Coach Pearsall following the wins over Saint Louis and No. 14 Michigan

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 16/17 University of Louisville softball team extended its season-opening win streak to 17 games with a 9-0 win over Saint Louis and a 2-1 victory over No. 14/14 Michigan Saturday in the Red & Black Tournament at Ulmer Stadium.

The Cardinals (17-0) have continued their best start and have now tied a school record 17 game winning streak set in the 2006 season.

"I'm really proud of how our team came out and played today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I was happy with the way we played Saint Louis. Our offense continued to produce against a good pitcher. Against Michigan, we faced one of our toughest tests this season. They have a tremendous pitcher, but our offense was able to get the job done. Our defense was solid and our pitchers continue to give us very good innings. I'm pleased with our entire team effort."

No. 16/17 Louisville 9 - Saint Louis 0 (Five Innings)
In the first game of the day, sophomore Caralisa Connell tossed a complete game shutout while sophomore Taner Fowler and junior Alicja Wolny each went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs as the Cards cruised to a 9-0 win over the Billikens.

Louisville started the scoring early, using six hits to put up a six-spot in the bottom of the first. Senior Kristin Austin drew a walk and sophomore Katie Keller followed with a double to set up Fowler's RBI single. Sophomore Jordan Trimble connected on a one-run hit and Wolny registered a hit to load the bases. Back-to-back two-run singles by sophomore Hannah Kiyohara's and freshman Whitney Arion gave the Cardinals a 6-0 lead.

The Cards struck again when Austin led off the second with her sixth triple of the season and crossed the plate on Fowler's base hit to make the score 7-0.

In the fifth inning Fowler reached on an error and Wolny sent a shot over left centerfield for her second home run of the season to give the Cards the 9-0 win.

Connell (5-0) notched her second straight complete game shutout, allowing two hits and striking out three in 5.0 innings.

Kelcie Matesa (3-5) took the loss, allowing nine runs, eight earned on nine hits and striking out two in 4.1 innings. Jessica Buschjost and Lindsay Friedman each had a single for the Billikens (11-11).

No. 16/17 Louisville 2 - No. 14/14 Michigan 1
Senior Tori Collins and sophomore Chelsea Leonard combined for 10 strikeouts while freshman Whitney Arion went 2 for 2 with an RBI and junior Katelyn Mann drove in the winning run as the Cards defeated 14th ranked Michigan 2-1.

Louisville got on the scoreboard in the second inning, when Mann reached on a fielder's choice, took second on sophomore Hannah Kiyohara's sacrifice bunt and came home on Arion's two-out RBI single.

The Cards added another run in the fourth. Sophomore Jordan Trimble delivered a leadoff double, moved to third on a passed ball and came home on Mann's sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 game.

The Wolverines got a run back in the fifth when Stephanie Kirkpatrick doubled and came around to score on Bree Evans' RBI single. An error allowed Nicole Sappingfield to reach and placed runners on the corners for Amanda Chidester, who sent a ball to deep right field, but Austin sprinted to make the catch for the third out of the inning.

Michigan threatened to score in the seventh when Amy Knapp drew a one-out walk and was safe at second on a fielder's interference call that placed Lyndsay Doyle at first to represent the go-ahead run on with two outs. Leonard delivered a strikeout to Evans and got Sappingfield to ground out to end the game.

Collins (8-0) got the win, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out eight in 5.0 innings. Leonard fanned two in 2.0 innings en route to her first save of the season.

Haylie Wagner (11-2) took the loss for the Wolverines (16-6), allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits in 6.0 innings. Evans was 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead Michigan offensively.

U of L (17-0) will face Saint Louis Sunday at 3 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.

Note:
This marks Louisville's second win over Michigan in 17 meetings. The first win came on March 7, 2009 when the Cards defeated the Wolverines 3-2 in eight inning at Ulmer Stadium.
