Softball Defeats IUPUI 12-1, Central Michigan 3-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kelsi Jones' one-out RBI double capped a three-run seventh inning and lifted the University of Louisville softball team to a 3-2 win over Central Michigan Saturday in the Cardinal Classic. The Cards defeated IUPUI 12-1 in their first game Saturday.

"I'm really pleased with today's effort," said Pearsall. "Maryssa Becker did a tremendous job for us in both games. We played with heart and played aggressively today and this is exactly what we needed to see. I couldn't be prouder of this team."

Whitney Arion went 2 for 2 with a triple and home run and Katie Keller was 2 for 3 with a three-run triple to key the Cardinals to a 12-1 victory over IUPUI. Freshman Maryssa Becker picked up her first collegiate win, holding the Jaguars scoreless and striking out four in 4.0 innings - she also helped her cause offensively, registering her first career home run in a 2 for 3, two run, two RBI performance at the plate.

The Cards took a 1-0 lead on Becker's home run in the top of the first and capitalized on six hits including Whitney Arion's two-run homer and Keller's three-run triple to score 10 runs in the third.

Louisville added a run in the fourth when Becker led off with a double and took third on Tiarra Sanabria fly out to right field. A wild pitch sent her home to give the Cards a 12-0 lead.

IUPUI's lone run came in the top of the fifth when walks to Lindsey Richards, Alyssa Neff and Sarah Lawrence loaded the bases for Roni Patterson's RBI single.

Becker (1-0) got the win, holding IUPUI scoreless on three hits and striking out four in 4.0 innings. Caralisa Connell gave up one run and struck out one in 0.2 innings. Sanabria gave up one hit in 0.1 inning. Jones was 2 for 3 with two runs and one RBI.

In the second game of the day, the teams played through four scoreless innings before Central Michigan (7-6) broke through in the top of the fifth when Evelyn Lorimer drove a one-out home run over left center field to give the Chippewas a 1-0 lead. CMU added to the lead in the seventh when Kristen Kuhlman reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on Trista Cox's single. A wild pitch sent her to third and another wild pitch sent her home to make the score 2-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hannah Kiyohara led off with an infield single and Brittany Sims reached on an error by Cox. Katie Keller followed and sent a hard ground ball to third where CMU's Danielle Marlink fielded and stepped on third for the first out of the inning. She sailed a throw past first base on a double play attempt which sent Keller to second. With runners on second and third and one out in the inning, Whitney Arion powered a two-run double to left field to tie the game. Jones followed with an RBI double to center field for the 3-2 win.

Becker (2-0) picked up her second win of the day, giving up one earned run on three hits and struck out five in 2.0 innings. Starter Rachel LeCoq allowed one earned run on eight hits and struck out four in 5.0 innings of work. Becker was 3 for 3 while Jones was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Arion was 1 for 4 with two RBIs in the game.

Chelsea Sundberg (2-4) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits and striking out one in 1.0 innings. Cox was 3 for 4 and Lorimer was 2 for 4 with a run and a home run to lead the Chippewas.

UofL (7-6) will wrap up the weekend against Northern Kentucky Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
