LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Caralisa Connell struck out eight and tossed a one-hit shutout as the No. 18 University of Louisville opened the home season with a 5-0 win over Kent State 5-0 Friday in the Cardinal Classic at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals (9-2) will face Buffalo (2-4) Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

"Caralisa pitched a very good game," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Defensively, I thought we did what we needed to do. Even though we scored five runs, as an offensive coach, I'm always thinking we can improve and make better decisions. Overall, I was pleased with the win."

The Golden Flashes (2-4) threatened early when Kim Kirkpatrick led off the game with a double and took third on Abbey Ledford's groundout to place, but Connell retired the final batter on a groundout to end the inning.

The Cards struck with two runs in the second. Jordan Trimble registered a leadoff single and took second on an error. Arion followed with a single and another defensive miscue sent both runners home to give Louisville a 2-0 lead.

The Cards tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Arion delivered a leadoff triple and Katelyn Mann followed with a single to place two runners on for Katelyn Mann's two-run single. Katie Keller doubled to plate Mann for the final 5-0 tally.

After issuing a walk in the fourth inning, Connell (4-1) went on to retire the final 10 batters en route to her second shutout of the season. Arion was 2 for 3 with two runs, while Mann was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Emma Johnson (1-2) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in 5.0 innings.
