Hello Cardinal Soccer Fans!
We had an exciting week in the Ville! On Thursday we took on the Pittsburgh Panthers in 1st round Big East Tournament play. Despite dominating play, we could not find the back of the net and went to overtime for the 5th time this season! With four minutes remaining in the 2nd OT Jamie Craft found the back of the net with a blast from 30 yards out. She was assisted by Jen Avila and Heather Engel.
That set the school record for wins (13) and put us in the quarterfinal vs. West Virginia who was ranked #6 in the nation!
We arrived in Morgantown on Friday night to find blustery, cold conditions. The weather broke in time for Sunday's game and the crowd was treated to a very good college soccer game. Despite 20 MPH winds, both teams created a few good chances in the first half. We went into the locker room tied at 0-0. The second half produced more of the same, with some good soccer being played by both teams. Forty-five minutes later we were heading to OT for the 6th time this season! After two 10 minute periods the game ended, officially a tie. To determine who advanced to the Big East semi's we went to penalty kicks. It was the best of 5 shooters from each team, then if tied, it would go to sudden death shooters. After 3 shooters from each team, it was tied up 3-3. The Mountaineer keeper was able to make a save on our 4th shooter and that proved the difference in the shootout, as we lost 5-4. Earning a tie with #6 in the country, on the road was a great accomplishment but not advancing to the semi finals was disappointing.
This Thursday be sure to watch the Cardinal Football Team, ranked #5 in the nation, take on West Virginia, ranked #3! The game is on ESPN at 7:30 eastern.
Up next is the NCAA selection show on Monday, Nov. 6th on ESPN News. The Cards will find out their NCAA tournament destiny at that time. We will be hosting a closed selection viewing party for the team and local media in the Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium lounge.
Go Cards!
