Behind the Scenes with Women's Soccer

Feb. 22, 2013

Throughout the spring semester, GoCards.com will provide weekly updates on the Louisville women's soccer program in the "Behind the Scenes" blog. For the month of February, Nicole Gerber gives a glimpse into the world of the Cardinals.

A DAY IN THE LIFE...by Nicole Gerber

We've all seen the stereotypical movies about college: the quarterback is dating the head cheerleader. The nerds were forced into doing the athletes' homework. And everyone either never gets enough sleep, or doesn't have good enough grades. Let me get this straight - college isn't like that.

A day in the life of a soccer player goes as follows...

5:30 AM: Alarm clock buzzes. Crap. I definitely JUST went to bed. Why me... just give me a few more minutes. (Hits the snooze button)

5:35 AM: BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ (Slams the alarm clock as fast and as hard as possible) Hmm, what to wear today? Definitely sweats. That's not even a question.

6:00 AM: Get to the locker room to change. Oh good morning team, I haven't seen you in a whole 16 hours! The music is playing and everyone is either still asleep or in "weird-mode."

6:30 AM: Practice outside starts. We'll warm up, and then play some possession games. We'll run fitness after, then split up into teams and play some small-sided games. Then, at the end of practice we'll play full field 11v11, and then finish with more fitness.

8:45/9:00 AM: Lifting with our strength coaches (either on the field or in Marshall Center).

9:15 AM: The mad rush in the locker room begins. Half the team is rushing off to class while the other half is showering and getting ready for the day.

10:00 AM-5:00 PM: A mixture of going to your classes (either taking notes, doing labs, taking tests or giving speeches), scrounging up a healthy lunch somehow with your friends, doing homework and getting study hall hours in. (Study hall is where most athletes go to do homework, meet with tutors, meet with our athletic advisors who figure out our lives and keep us on track, print things out, socialize with teammates and other athletes and secretly hide eating food). Just get through this day of classes and I'll fit my nap in some time! (Looks up hopefully)

5:00-9:00 PM: This is about the time that everyone goes back to their dorms or houses or apartments and starts to unwind. We hang out with our friends, play some video games, cook dinner or go out to a dining hall, watch movies or TV, and either finish our homework, write our papers, or study for any tests coming up. Productive day so far... nice! Mixed in there, of course, is talking about how tired we are, talking about what happened in practice that day, talking about the day ahead, dirtying the room up, playing pranks on each other, and complaining about school work and our majors (especially the engineers). This is one of my favorite parts of the day. It's so fun and normally filled with laughs and funny stories we tell each other.

9:00-10:30 PM: This is the time we start to get ready for bed and the day ahead of us. We get our books and our clothes together and clean up the room from the mess we made. And you mentally get yourself ready to wake up and do the same thing the next day! Ahhh, oh how I've missed you bed.

Even though we basically do the same things every day, it's still fun and entertaining, and each day gives you an opportunity to learn something new in school and get better in your sport. Life as a Cardinal couldn't be any more sweet!
