LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Angelika Uremovich scored a pair of goals to lead the 12th-ranked Louisville women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Toledo on the final day of the 2012 Courtyard by Marriott Louisville Airport Cardinal Classic Sunday afternoon at Cardinal Park.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 5-1-0 overall and finished in third place in the weekend event, while Toledo dropped to 2-5-0 with the loss and finished fourth overall. Samford won the event with a 3-1 triumph over Kentucky to open Sunday's action.
After trailing 1-0 early in the second half of Sunday's game, the Cardinals clinched the win with three goals in a 22-minute stretch, including the two from Uremovich (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola) marking the second time this season she has scored twice in a match. Uremovich leads Louisville with six goals in six matches this season.
"I was not happy with the way we started the first half, but the increased energy and effort to start the second half was the difference," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "The credit goes to our kids for the second half, but we have to understand that we must respect the game from the opening whistle in every match we play."
After a scoreless first half of action, Toledo connected for the first goal of the match early in the second half when Rachel MacLeod scored inside the left post from 15 yards away in the 52nd minute for a 1-0 advantage. The goal for MacLeod was her team-leading third of the season.
The Cardinals answered back in the 59th minute when junior Chelsea Hunter (Novi, Mich./Walled Lake Western HS) scored on a penalty kick for her first career goal. The scoring chance was setup when junior Charlyn Corral (Mexico City, Mexico/Tecnologico de Monterrey) was fouled in the box by a Toledo defender.
Louisville gained the lead in Sunday's match in the 70th minute when Uremovich scored past Toledo goalkeeper Kelsey Borowitz on a header from eight yards away following a corner kick from Corral. The assist for Corral was her fourth of the season, which leads the Cardinals.
The final goal of the day came in the 81st minute when Uremovich connected inside the right post from 22 yards on a ball from freshman Andrea Distler for the final margin. The two-goal performance by Uremovich increased her career total to 15, while the assist for Distler was the first of her career.
The Cardinals controlled Sunday's game statistically holding a 19-6 advantage in shots, including an 8-2 edge on goal, and a 7-0 cushion in corner kicks.
Up next, Louisville will take to the road for its BIG EAST Conference opener at Notre Dame on Friday at 4 p.m., ET in a nationally televised match on ESPNU. The Cardinals will close the weekend at DePaul on Sunday at 2 p.m., ET.
