No. 14 Women's Soccer Rolls Past UNCG to Remain Unbeaten

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The 14th-ranked Louisville women's soccer team pushed its season-opening winning streak to four with Sunday afternoon's 3-0 victory over UNC-Greensboro to clinch the UK Tropical Smoothie Invitational title. Three different Cardinals found the scoring column on Sunday led by sophomore Erin Yenney (Troy, Ohio/Troy HS), who also added an assist in the winning effort. She was joined by freshman Irene Young (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and junior Angelika Uremovich (Oakville, Ont./St. Ignatius of Loyola), who each had goals in the win. "I'm happier today with our overall performance," said Cardinals' head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Our backs were much better offensively and it allowed us to generate and sustain more of an attacking presence. It's a great game for us to continue to build off of tactically." Following a scoreless first half on Sunday, Louisville gained a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute when Yenney scored on a header for her second goal of the season and the third of her career. Uremovich was credited with the assist, her first of the season. The Cardinals added to their advantage less than 12 minutes later when Young collected a loose ball and scored inside the far post for a 2-0 advantage in the 76th minute. It was the first career goal for Young. Louisville closed out the scoring in the 83rd minute when Uremovich pushed past UNCG goalkeeper Jamie Simmons from six yards out for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Yenney and junior Rachel Melhado (Brampton, Ont./Turner Fenton SS), playing in her first game since competing at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, were each credited with assists on the goal.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Chloe Kiefer (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Divine Saviour HS) needed just one save to clinch her third shutout of the season and the 13th of her career. Overall, Louisville finished with a 16-3 advantage in shots, including an 8-1 margin on-goal. The Cardinals finished with a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Louisville has scored three or more goals in three straight games overall, the first time they have achieved that feat since the 1992 season. Prior to Sunday's victory, the Cardinals earned a 4-0 win over Southeast Missouri on Friday and a 4-3 double overtime win against Purdue on Aug. 24. Four Cardinals -- Yenney, junior Chelsea Hunter , Uremovich and Kiefer -- were named to the All-Tournament Team following the completion of the event. Up next, the Cardinals will return home to host the 2012 Courtyard by Marriott Louisville Airport Cardinal Classic on Sept. 7-9 at Cardinal Park. Louisville will open the event on Friday at 7:30 p.m., ET against rival Kentucky, while Toledo will take on Samford in the first match of the day at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Samford and Kentucky will begin the day's doubleheader at noon before Louisville returns to action against Toledo at 2:30 p.m. |
