Cardinals' Second Varsity Eight Named American Boat of the Year

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Fresh off capturing the title at the 2014 American Athletic Conference Rowing Championship, Louisville's second varsity eight was chosen for the inaugural American Boat of the Year award on Friday.

The boat was coxswained by Sophie St. Martin, who was joined by Hanna Spittel, Lizzie DeVries, Katie Nord, Kara Savegnago, Amy Van Syoc, Kylen Pattermann, Sam Sinnett and Abbie Wade.

The crew had an outstanding year, capturing American Boat of the Week honors a league-best three times during the season. The crew topped No. 20 Duke at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite, finishing in 6:55.40 winning by a 12.6 second margin. They also went undefeated at the Clemson Invitational, besting crews from No. 13 UCLA, No. 15 Wisconsin and No. 16 Cornell, posting a best time on the weekend of 7:04.4. The crew boosted the No. 17 Cardinals to a crown in the conference championship, winning the 2V8 race on Mercer Lake in 6:44.43, crossing the line nearly 15 seconds ahead of UCF.

The second varsity eight was seeded No. 15 in the upcoming 2014 NCAA Championship and will compete in Heat 2 against Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Stanford and Princeton. The crew will be competing in the first NCAA Championships in school history after clinching an automatic bid by winning the conference championship.
