Rowing Opens 2014 with Red-Black Week Competition

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing team kicked off its return to campus and resumed preparations for the 2014 racing season with the Red-Black Week sports performance competition on Jan 7-10.

Competing in an assortment of physically demanding events, the Red team scored 2,363 points to earn the victory over the Black squad's 1,531 points. The victorious Red team featured Chiara Ponko, Nicole DiTommaso, Cynthia Doyle, Morgan Dunham, Paula Gollnick, Maleena Hackbarth, Blythe Magnuson, Darya Marchanka, Victoria McLaren, Jami Montesano, Kylie Noltemeyer, Katie Nord, Annie Pape, Kara Savegnago, Sam Sinnett, Hanna Spittel, Marissa Thalen, Abbie Wade and Mary Waldman.

The Black squad included Katie McGrath, Gabi Biedenharn, McKenzie Clifford, Lizzie DeVries, Ashleigh Hodge, Jenny Marler, Emma Melton, Katie Miller, Kylen Pattermann, Hannah Ritter, Alexis Speliotis, Sophie St. Martin, Shelby Stafford, Maddy Staubitz, Amy Van Syoc, Elise Valantine, Kelsey Webb, Lucy Wilshier, Amanda Zalno and Andrea Zorn. The competition included a series of six individual events where the top eight finishers for each team scored points, while three additional team scoring events comprised the scoring.

The Cardinals are scheduled to open the spring racing season on March 15-16 with the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
