LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing program hosted the third annual Red-Black Day on Saturday morning at the Cardinal Boathouse on River Road. For the second straight year, the event included three intra-squad scrimmage races, a pair of races featuring Louisville rowing alumnae and concluded with a cookout with the rowers and coaches courtesy of Frisch's.
"The Red-Black Day is a lot of fun for our team and a chance for us to share a day of rowing, food and fun with our fans and families," said Louisville head coach Laura Aubrey. "This event also allows us to bring back a lot of our great rowing alums and get them on the water again for some exciting competition. I want to thank everyone who came out today to support our team and our program."
The featured race of the day had the Cards' varsity eight boat, comprised of juniors and seniors, earning an open-water win over the Louisville alumnae. U of L's varsity boat included coxswain Ashley Edwardson, Katie Rorer, Katie Scordo, Anastasia Prokopenko, Sam Kayser, Lauren Mensch, Sam Seldon, Kira Lawson and Ruthie Fligor.
In the first eights race of the day, the Cards' Red crew of coxswain Ellen Fawcett, Prokopenko, Scordo, Isabelle Gottschalk, Mallorie Campbell, Cameron Thompson, Fligor, Mikaela Robrahn and Emily Johnson earned a half-boat length win over the Red crew of coxswain Tara McKiernan, Brown, Kimberly Fitzpatrick, Mensch, Annemarie Bobel, Katy Congleton, Angela Gregorio, Allison Siu and Jamie Collins.
In the second eights race, U of L's Red crew of Edwardson, Kayser, Lawson, Catherine Chivers, Cara Littleton, Courtney McClure, Lina Azarova, Kathleen O'Connell and Lexi Webb earned a three-boat length victory over the Black crew of coxswain Kimberly Feinberg, Rorer, Falovo, Annie Stadig, Kylie Wrenn, Rebecca Smith, Chelsea Haack, Allison Dukes and Lauryn Faulkenberg.
In the final intra-squad scrimmage of the morning, the Cards' Black crew of Fawcett, Brown, Fitzpatrick, Erin Bennett, Chivers, Chelsea Coorts, Haack, Azarova and Kayla Kroninger picked up a one-boat length win over the Red crew of Feinberg, Rorer, Scordo, Prokopenko, Kayser, Mensch, Seldon, Lawson and Fligor.
Along with the final race of the day, the Louisville alumnae also raced in a special alumnae fours race. Among the former Louisville rowers in attendance on Saturday were Mallory Hamman, Jill Reeves and Sha'Lori Moore from the Class of 2009, Kristin Bloom, Rachel Mersch and Kathryn Hagglund from 2008, Nicole Alderson and Denise Borders from 2007, Olivia Brittain, Jessica Grigsby, Melissa Hudson, Katie Prince, Mandy Moore, Jenna Sample and Becky Smith from 2006 and Karen Bramer and Stephanie Baker from 2005.
The Cardinals will next compete on Nov. 7 at the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn.
