INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Louisville rowing team closed its first ever appearance at the NCAA Championship with a 17th-place finish following the final day of racing on Sunday morning at Eagle Creek Park.

The Cardinals finished with 44 points during the three days of competition , while Ohio State won its second straight national championship scoring 126 points overall. Louisville finished just one point behind 16th-place Wisconsin and only four points behind No. 15 San Diego.

"I'm proud of the effort and competitiveness our team showed this weekend and it's a great way to finish a special season for our program," said second year head coach Derek Copeland. "It was a great experience for our team because the only way to know how to prepare for this championship is to go through it. We learned as we went and really adapted well to everything each day.

"It's been fun to see how the seniors on this team have improved since they arrived and the impact they've had on the success we've experienced this season," Copeland said. "They should be very proud of what they have accomplished and what they did for our program."

During Sunday's final day of racing, the Cardinals' second varsity eight crew of Sophie St. Martin (coxswain), Abbie Wade, Amy Van Syoc, Lizzie DeVries, Cynthia Doyle, Kylen Pattermann, Hanna Spittel, Marissa Thalen and Katie Nord rowed to a second-place finish in the C final with a time of 6:56.304, while Indiana led the way at 6:54.735. Louisville's varsity eight boat with Andrea Zorn (coxswain), Elise Valantine, Lucy Wilshier, Morgan Dunham, Hannah Ritter, Darya Marchanka, Amanda Zalno, Jami Montesano and Sam Sinnett earned fourth-place finish in Sunday's C final with a time of 6:57.324, while UCLA paced the field of six teams at 6:48.995.

Louisville's varsity four crew of Chiara Ponko (coxswain), Paula Gollnick, Kylie Noltemeyer, Kara Savegnago and Maddy Staubitz raced to a fourth-place finish in the C final with a time of 7:46.557, while Washington State led the way at 7:36.126.

"As a program, we will keep going from here with the goal of staying on this trajectory as we move into the future," said Copeland. "Congratulations to everyone at Ohio State on what they've accomplished in winning back-to-back NCAA titles. It's phenomenal what they've done as a Midwestern program using a model for success that is similar to ours and something that we believe we can also achieve."
