LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville field hockey team will open the 2014 season against Saint Louis Friday at 4 p.m. at Trager Stadium. Admission is free to all regular season home games.
The Cardinals enter the 2014 season ranked No 15 in the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association preseason poll after finishing last year in the same spot. In 2013, UofL compiled a 15-5 overall record and went 6-1 in BIG EAST play en route to capturing a share of the regular season title. Returning from the 2013 team are eight starters and 18 letterwinners including: NFHCA All-West Region and all-conference selections: Alyssa Voelmle, Sydney King and Elisa Garcia and 2013 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Shannon Sloss.
2014 marks UofL's first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference
Head coach Justine Sowry is in her fourth season at the helm and has led Louisville to a 37-22 mark in the past three years.
The Cardinals are on a 10-game winning streak at home after posting a 10-0 record at Trager Stadium in 2013. Their last home loss came on November 2, 2012 when UofL fell 2-1 to UConn in overtime in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship. The Cards' last regular season home loss was on Sept. 23, 2012 when current ACC (and former BIG EAST) opponent Syracuse defeated Louisville 2-1 in overtime.
Three-time all-conference selection senior Alyssa Voelmle returns as the Cards' leading scorer (11G, 5A, 27 PTS) in 2013.

Scouting the Billikens: Saint Louis is led by first-year head coach Hayley Rausch. The Billikens, who finished the 2013 season with a 1-19 record, were picked to finish ninth in the 2014 A-10 Preseason Poll.

Scouting the Wildcats: The Wildcats are coming off a 15-7 (5-0 America East) campaign and notched their fourth-straight America East title and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2013. Head coach Robin Balducci's squad was picked to finish second in the 2014 America East Preseason Poll.
Last year, the Wildcats were led defensively by 2013 America East Goalkeeper of the Year, Carlie Tarbell, who had six shutouts and led the league in save percentage (.745). On the offensive side, Meg Flatley led the team with 38 points and 16 goals.
Last time out:
Sophomore Shannon Sloss scored two goals and Mallory Mason added another in a preseason scrimmage against No. 20 Iowa. The Cards fell 4-3 in regulation after Iowa held a 13-8 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corners. Junior Sydney King collected three saves in the game.
Following this weekend, the Cardinals will hit the road for a four-game road swing starting with a pair of games at Northwestern. UofL will face Dartmouth on Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. and No. 14 Northwestern on Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.
