LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Junior forward Kayla May scored a pair of goals and Nikki Auker added one as the eleventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated visiting Robert Morris 3-0 Friday night at Trager Stadium.
The teams played through 15 scoreless minutes before Auker broke through to put the Cards on the scoreboard. The sophomore forward dribbled into the circle and drove the ball past RMU goalkeeper Stephanie Seeley at the 16:43 mark.
Ten minutes later, the Cards struck again when senior Lauren Schaefer rifled a penalty corner shot to May who was posted up on the left side of the cage to make it a 2-0 game.
U of L took the 2-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Colonials 6-0 and holding a 7-0 penalty corner advantage in the first half.
The Cardinals increased the offensive pressure in the second half, rattling off 13 shots and denying the Colonials any scoring opportunities. May tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the season when she tipped sophomore Rachel Hollenbach's shot from the top of the circle to make the score 3-0 at the 54:30 mark.
Louisville goalkeeper junior Heather Bustanoby improved to 11-5 and registered her third shutout of the year. RMU's Seeley had seven saves on the night. The Colonials drop to 4-12 on the season.
The Cards (11-5, 4-1 BIG EAST) will play host to Northwestern Sunday at 1 p.m. Following this weekend, the Cards will play their final non-conference game at Indiana on Wednesday and then close out the regular season by hosting Georgetown in a BIG EAST Conference game on Saturday, November 1 at 1 p.m. U of L will honor senior Lauren Schaefer at prior to the Georgetown game.
