LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Aileen Davis' two goals gave fifth-ranked Wake Forest a 2-1 win over the host 14th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium. The Cardinals (8-7) held an advantage in shots and penalty corners, but Davis' goal with three minutes remaining in the game gave the Demon Deacons (10-4) the win.

"We played hard when we were down and tied the game - we've done that several times this season and came away with some tough losses," said junior captain Nicole Youman, who scored the game-tying goal for the Cardinals. "We need to take the next step and play to finish the game with a win."

Wake Forest jumped to a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. Melissa Martin's push found past U of L senior goalkeeper Heather Bustanoby.

Louisville went on to outshoot the Demon Deacons 6-3 and gain a 4-1 corner advantage, but Wake goalkeeper Kaitlyn Ruhf turned back four shots to keep the score 1-0 as the teams entered the break.

The Cards answered early in the second half when Youman intercepted a Wake Forest defensive pass near 25 yard line, dribbled into the circle and delivered a shot past Ruhf to tie the game at 1-1.

The game remained knotted for the next 27 minutes with the teams trading shots and penalty corners, but Wake's final corner with just over three minutes remaining produced the game winning goal. Davis struck again when she tipped Florin van den Bent's shot for the 2-1 final.

U of L outshot Wake Forest 10-6 and held a 7-6 edge in corners in the game. Ruhf (7-2) collected seven saves in the game. Bustanoby (8-7) had two stops.

The Cards (8-7, 3-2 BIG EAST) will wrap up the home season on Thursday, Oct. 22 when the play host to Pacific at 3 p.m.
