Field Hockey Falls 3-2 to Indiana in OT

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Louisville field hockey team took a 2-1 lead in the second half, but could not hold on as host Indiana edged the Cardinals 3-2 in overtime Friday afternoon.

Morgan Fleetwood's goal just 1:11 into the sudden-victory overtime gave the host Hoosiers (4-0) their fourth straight win. Louisville (3-2) will face Ohio University Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Hoosiers took advantage of an early penalty corner to jump to a 1-0 lead. Fleetwood used assists from Danielle McNally and Mariella Grote to put Indiana on the scoreboard at the 3:11 mark.

Louisville answered with less than four minutes remaining in the first half when sophomore Becca Maddock connected on a penalty corner assist from freshman Victoria Stratton for her fourth goal of the season.

The teams entered halftime knotted at 1-1 with Indiana holding a 6-3 advantage in shots, and Louisville with a 2-1 edge in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Erin Conrad posted four first half saves .

The intensity increased in the second half with IU holding a slight edge in shots (8-7) and penalty corners (5-4). The Cards pulled ahead midway through the second half when junior Erin Schneidtmiller collected a rebound and sent the ball past IU's Viki Green for her fourth goal of the season pulled the Cards ahead 2-1.

Indiana responded at the 61:24 mark when Grote dished a breakaway pass to the right corner of the cage where Nicole Volgraf tied the score at 2-2.

With the game still tied at 2-2, the teams entered a seven per side sudden-victory overtime period. Fleetwood notched her second goal of the game when the Hoosiers were awarded the first penalty corner of the period.

 

 

In the game, Indiana outshot Louisville 15-10 and held a 7-6 advantage in corners. Conrad (3-2) collected seven saves in the game while Green had three stops for Indiana.
