Bria Smith and Russ Smith
July 25, 2013
Last week, members of the University of Louisville women's basketball team got to join the elite of the sports world by appearing at the 2013 ESPYS at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
Head coach Jeff Walz, seniors Shoni Schimmel, Antonita Slaughter, and juniors Sara Hammond, Bria Smith and Jude Schimmel were invited to represent Louisville as the Cardinals were nominated for Best Upset.
All the Cardinals arrived the day before the awards and hung around the pool and took pictures in the ESPYS photo booth.
Wednesday was spent getting ready for the ESPYS. After getting ready at the hotel, the Cardinals' contingent hit the Red Carpet at around 3:45 PT for the 6 p.m. show. Following the awards show was an after-party that enabled all of the nights' attendees to mingle and share in a night that honors the best in sports.
Junior Bria Smith stopped by for a Q&A about her experience at the ESPYS:
What was your reaction when you found out you were invited to the of ESPYS?
My initial reaction to learning we had been invited to the ESPYS was one of absolute excitement. To know we were even considered to have one of the biggest upsets of the year out of all the games was a huge honor.
What was your favorite thing about the ESPYS?
My favorite thing about the ESPYS was being around all the famous athletes and celebrities you see on TV. And being able to interact with them was the best part.
Who were you most excited to meet?
The person I was most excited to meet was either Lisa Leslie or P. Diddy. We were able to take pictures and speak with both of them. It was really cool that they knew who we were and they congratulated us on such a tremendous season.
What was it like to share this experience with your teammates and Coach Walz?
The experience itself was unreal but to be able to share it with my teammates and Coach Walz was amazing. It really just put a cherry on top of the type of year we had and rewarded us for all the hard work we put in.
