LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
Jameka Jones scored 25 second-half points to lead UNC Charlotte to a 75-62 upset win over Louisville in first-round action of the 2000 Jewish Hospital Conference USA Women's Basketball Tournament Friday evening at Freedom Hall.
The Cardinals led 29-26 at the half, but 14.3 percent (5-for-36) shooting from the floor in the second half was too much to overcome. Jones hit a pair of three-pointers in the first three and half minutes of the second half to help give UNCC a 34-33 advantage with 16:45 and the Cardinals would never regain the lead.
U of L went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 54 with just more than five minutes to play, but the Lady 49ers responded with 11 straight points to secure the win.
Alison Bass led the Cardinals (16-13) with 16 points and Jill Morton added 13 in the losing effort. Louisville converted on 32-of-34 trips to the free throw line for the game. Jones finished with a game-high 31 points, while Tonya Phifer scored 17 for UNCC.
